GLASS • PLASTIC • ALUMINUM Beverage containers are usually recyclable and can also generate an income for your school. Make recycle containers available in the classroom and around campus to encourage students to recycle. Assign student groups to collect from the recycle containers weekly and separate the HI5 containers to generate additional income.
School campus can also be a location for large community recycling bins. It provides a convenient location for the neighborhood to recycle glass, plastic and paper.

COMPOSTING If your school site has garden areas organic compost piles can be created for soil amendment. Be sure to monitor the organic waste (no dairy or meat) to keep the compostat a decomposing balance and odor free. Assign student groups to monitor organic waste and to turn pilles regularly. Vermicomposting using worms to break down food waste can be another way to reduce organic waste.

BATTERIES & CELLPHONES One way to recycle more electronics is to have a drive where students are encouraged to bring in old batteries and cell phones from around their homes and neighborhood. We want to prevent getting battery acid in our land fill, while plastics, copper, gold, lead, zinc, nickel and iron can be recovered from old cell phones. Working cell phones can also be collected for charitable donations.

WHITE & COLORED PAPER should be recycled from the copy and printer machines. A container near each machine designated for recycling provides another area to collect recyclable paper that might end up in the trash can. Schools can also implement a two-sided copying/printing policy.
